Soil Stabilisation and Lime Treated Soils

Found a good web-page here today on the British Lime Associations web-site which discusses the techniques, processes, advantages and benefits of treating unsuitable materials with Lime.  The page firstly looks at how Lime Stabilisation can be carried out and the different levels of treatment, including:

  • Improvement – by the addition of quicklime only the soil is dried as an exothermic reaction takes place removing moisture
  • Modification – when quicklime is added to clay soils “the clay platelets go through an ion exchange process, which introduces calcium into the clay surface and causes a change in the way the clay platelets align” giving an increase in strength
  • Stabilisation – by the addition of both quicklime and a cementitious binder greater strengths can be achieved
The process of treating the soil is then described along with the many benefits and advantages of choosing this technique.  Have a look and let us know what you think.
