Soil Stabilisation is used throughout construction in the UK.


Often soil modification is used to offset the costs and environmental issues of developing land. The process involves upgrading in-situ the ground by binding it with other materials.

You will find soil stabilisation used in the following instances:

  • Ferry ports and air ports
  • Car and heavy goods carparks and fuel stations.
  • Road and pavement construction
  • Water-logged site (rapid reduction of moisture content )
  • Foundations for flooring
  • Reclaiming land otherwise contaminated

 

The process involves 3 stages of treating the soil (the soil stabilisation process):

Stage 1: Modification and Improvement

Moisture is removed from the materials, this enables the digging, excavation and compaction of general fill materials to be done quickly and cost effectively. This is usually completed by introducing of small deposits of quick-lime, around 0.75% to 3% (dry mass) although this amount may differ based on lab results. The process of lime stabilisation is detailed here.

Stage 2: Stabilisation of the ground

The host material is mixed with binding material and water, this produces a cementing effect on the product which results in a lasting strength and increased durability, again the mix is derived from lab results and human inspection by experts.

Stage 3: Post Stabilisation Process

This stage is designed to produce a superior quality performing product, highly defined restrictions, testing and controls are in place to achieve this result.
